I love Ted Leo. I saw him live at the Orpheum way back in ‘06, and he called out a heckler and told him to shut the fuck up. Of course, he said it in a witty, only slightly condescending way, but it funny none the less. That was awesome, and of course makes him all the more awesome. I can’t say I love him enough to download the entire Chisel discography, but he’s up there in the all-time favorites list. Anyway, here’s his new single. It kicks ass, not that I’m very surprised. The new album, entitled The Brutalist Bricks, will be out March 9, 2010.

Check out the first single, “Even Heroes Have to Die” below:

Miami Independent Thinkers

The Miami Independent Thinkers hosted an array of events, celebrating a plethora of artists working with all types of mediums. Mixed media works, writing, photography, and the more traditional forms of art including photography and sculpture were highlighted. Each day of the event hosted a different special performance, starting on Thursday, December 3, with film screenings and evening performances. DJs, Dancers, Film Screenings, and other musical performances were showcased throughout the event, including a special closing performance by G.Love on Sunday, December 6. The event closed off with a Sunday Farmers Market and with yoga classes.
Mitrani Warehouse hosted the event, and can be found at 222 NW 27th Street in Miami, Fl.

Claudia Calle

Claudia Calle, a Colombian born artist, celebrated the grand opening of her new studio during Art Basel week. Her work, entitled The Republic of China, focused on the growing international dependence on China for cheaply made goods. The art focused on the impact that this demand has had on China – from how their values have changed, to how the rich traditions in the country have diminished over time. Through a variety of medias including painting and photography, Calle presented her ideas.
The gallery hosted her own work as well as work from other local Miami artists. The Claudia Calle Studio is located at 2722 NW 2 Ave Miami, Fl, in the Wynwood Art District.

The Shepard Fairey

On NW 27 St and NW 2 Ave sat an entire public line of artwork by none other than the Shepard Fairey. Most popular for the OBEY sticker campaign, the Shepard Fairey displayed a brand new set of prints and other propaganda style artwork. The display featured large scale prints of different womens’ faces, as well as small propaganda style posters.

Fountain Art Fair

The Fountain Art Fair ran from December 3 – December 6, and displayed art from all over the United States. Local Miami artists as well as nationally known artists displayed their art during Miami’s Art Basel 2009. The gallery showcased artwork in all types of mediums, including a live performance art piece.
Apart from the artwork, the Art Fair also had a number of special performances, including musical performances from G. Love and Chairlift, as well as a live screen printing by Russell Young.

On Thursday, December 3, the Miami Art Museum hosted an event to showcase the work of modern Miami artists. Guillermo Kuitca had the main display at the museum, with his complete works from 1980 – 2008 displayed. Carlos Bunga also displayed work, entitled “Metamorphosis”. The Shepard Fairey also displayed a mural on the wall outside of the museum.

Darth Stewie at The Vagabond

While most Art Basel events in Miami typically focus on all types of art, Vagabond, the ultra hip lounge in Downtown, flexed it’s nerdy (but totally still cool) side with the promotional party for the new Family Guy DVD release, Family Guy: Something , Something, Something Darkside. The DVD is the second Family Guy spoof on the classic Star Wars franchise, and will be released December 22.
Sitting a-top the roof of Vagabond was a 45-foot inflated Darth Stewie, while two Storm Troopers sat atop the ledge of the building. The party featured DJ sets by Daniel Hunt of Ladytron, Hollywood Holt, and FIGO. Other DJs OBi, Team Rojas, and Johnny the Boy also performed sets at the event.
Vagabond will be hosting Art Basel events for the rest of the week. For more information, check out www.thevagabondmiami.com.

Primary Flight

Ditching the paintbrushes and cameras, some of Miami’s best artists picked up their spray paint cans and took to the streets. Branding itself as the ‘world’s largest site-specific street level mural installation’, Primary Flight has been providing a platform for Miami’s artists since 2007. Spread out over the entire community of Wynwood and the Miami Design District, the artists are given space among abandoned buildings, massive walls, and urban locations to paint on. Their main complex is located on NW 24th Street and NW 6th Ave. The complex will feature art on both the inside and outside walls.
Primary Flight is also sponsoring an event in the Miami Beach area, specifically Blue. Print. For. Space, an exhibition at the Art Center/South Florida. The exhibition at the Art Center will run from December 1 to January 2, 2010. The street murals will be an ongoing project from December 1 to December 6. More information, including the map of where to find these street murals, are all available on primaryflight.com
